International prices: Industrial rubber
Buying rubber without knowing which one you need costs money in two directions: paying for a material that overshoots the application, or saving on one that degrades within a year. The difference usually comes down to three or four decisions made before the first quote is requested.
This page is the starting point. It covers where each type of rubber comes from, how they genuinely differ, and what to ask before committing to an order.
Where rubber comes from
There are two origins and they have nothing in common.
Natural rubber is tapped from the latex of the Hevea brasiliensis tree. It is the original material, with an elasticity synthetics are still chasing, and with the drawback of any agricultural product: price follows the harvest, the weather and the growing region.
Synthetic rubber is a petroleum derivative. It is made in a petrochemical plant, which means stable supply, consistent properties from batch to batch, and a price that tracks crude rather than climate. Essentially all industrial rubber you will be quoting is synthetic.
The three that matter
Within synthetics, three types cover almost the entire finished-product market.
SBR — styrene-butadiene
The most produced synthetic rubber in the world. It was invented in Germany during the Second World War, when European powers lost access to the plantations of Southeast Asia and natural rubber had to be replaced with something manufacturable at home.
It is a copolymer: the chemical union of two monomers that each contribute something different.
- Styrene — contributes hardness and wear resistance. It is the same compound found in disposable cup plastic.
- Butadiene — contributes elasticity and flexibility. It is the close relative of natural rubber.
The ratio between the two determines whether the resulting material is stiffer or more elastic, and it is one of the things worth asking about on a technical data sheet.
Virgin or recycled. This distinction weighs on price more than the composition itself. Virgin SBR comes straight from the petrochemical plant: cleaner, more expensive, with consistent properties. Recycled SBR comes from shredding end-of-life tyres, pressed with a polyurethane binder and cured in a mould. Its natural colour is black or grey, because that is the colour of tyre carbon.
In gym, weights and CrossFit flooring, recycled dominates the market by a cost margin no manufacturer ignores.
EPDM — ethylene, propylene and diene
The name is its three components. The first two form long, smooth chains that, left alone, would slide over one another and stay deformed once stretched.
The diene is what solves that: it acts as a cross-link between chains. On vulcanisation — heat plus sulphur — those links close and form a three-dimensional network. The result is a material that stretches under load and returns to shape instead of staying marked.
This is the outdoor rubber. It withstands ultraviolet radiation without fading, which makes it the default material for plazas, parks and any exposed surface where appearance matters. It takes a wide colour range.
TPV — thermoplastic vulcanisate
The most expensive of the three and the one with the widest colour range. Very durable, very elastic, with the best colour retention outdoors.
The trade-off is supply rather than quality: permanent stock is rare, it is imported against order, and lead times are those of any import.
What each one costs
Import values declared at customs give a useful reference, because they are prices actually paid rather than offer listings.

The practical conclusion is the gap between rows: EPDM costs around 57 % more per kilo than SBR. That difference is what has to be justified every time EPDM is specified, and the reason so many projects combine the two.
These are bulk raw material figures. The price of a finished product also carries binder, pigment, energy, tooling and factory margin, and none of those appear here.
How to decide
Four questions settle most cases.
Will it be in the sun? If yes, pigmented SBR will lose colour. EPDM or TPV.
Does colour matter? Recycled SBR takes pigment, but with a short palette and lower stability. EPDM opens the range and TPV opens it fully.
What is your lead time? This is the question that derails the most projects. An imported material can take around ninety days to arrive, and in peak season not every colour is available at once. If the site has a deadline, lead time overrules specification.
What is the budget per square metre? Often the right answer is not one material but two: an EPDM wear layer over a recycled SBR shock base. You pay for colour and weather resistance only in the layer that is seen and walked on, and the economical material provides the volume.
Before requesting a quote
A quote is worth little if it does not specify what needs comparing. At minimum: rubber type and whether virgin or recycled, thickness, format and dimensions, colour with reference, quantity, lead time and delivery terms.
Without those, two quotes for the same product can differ by 40 % without either one lying.
