SBR: what it is and how to buy it
SBR stands for styrene-butadiene rubber. It is the most produced synthetic rubber in the world and, by a wide margin, the one you will meet most often when quoting finished products.
What it is made of
It is a copolymer: not a simple material but the chemical union of two monomers, each contributing what the other lacks.
- Styrene — contributes hardness and wear resistance. It is the same compound found in disposable cup plastic.
- Butadiene — contributes elasticity and flexibility. It is the close relative of natural rubber.
The ratio between the two decides whether the resulting material leans stiff or elastic. It is worth asking for, because two grades sold under the same name can behave differently and that difference does not always appear in the offer.
Where it comes from
It was invented in Germany during the Second World War. The European powers had lost access to the rubber plantations of Southeast Asia and needed a substitute that could be manufactured at home, without depending on a tree growing ten thousand kilometres away.
That origin as an industrial substitute explains its position today: it is made in a petrochemical plant, with stable supply and consistent properties from batch to batch, and its price tracks crude oil rather than a harvest.
Virgin or recycled
This distinction weighs on the final price more than the composition itself, and it is the first question to ask.
Virgin SBR. Straight from the petrochemical plant. Cleaner, consistent properties, and markedly more expensive. It gets specified when the product demands uniformity — light and even colour, tight tolerances — and rarely when what you need is cushioning volume.
Recycled SBR. From shredding end-of-life tyres. The granulate is mixed with a polyurethane binder, pressed and cured in a mould. Its natural colour is black or grey, because that is the colour of tyre carbon, and it takes pigment with a short palette.
Recycled dominates the finished-product market by a cost margin no manufacturer ignores. In sports, weights and functional training flooring it is effectively the standard.
Its weak point
Colour stability in sunlight. Pigmented SBR fades under ultraviolet exposure. It does not fail structurally — it keeps cushioning — but it loses its appearance, and on a surface installed for its colour that counts as a failure.
Which is why its natural territory is indoors, or outdoors where appearance is not the point: open-air training circuits, high-abrasion areas, projects where the budget rules.
What to require on a data sheet
An SBR offer that does not carry this cannot be compared with another:
- Virgin or recycled, and for recycled, the origin of the granulate
- Particle size distribution
- Density
- Binder type and proportion
- Colour reference, if pigmented
- Thickness and tolerance
- Minimum order quantity and lead time
Density is the one most often left out and the one that most changes the price per square metre, because it determines how much material is actually in the piece.
