EPDM: what it is and what it is for
EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer. It is the rubber you specify where the sun hits.
What the three letters mean
The name is literally its three components, and the third does the interesting work.
Ethylene and propylene form long, smooth molecular chains. On their own they have a problem: stretch them and they slide over one another and stay deformed for good. That is the difference between an elastic material and one that simply gives.
The diene solves it by acting as a cross-link. On vulcanisation — heat plus sulphur — those links close and tie the chains to one another, forming a three-dimensional network.
The practical result: under load the chains stretch and cushion; when the load lifts, the diene links pull them back. The material returns to shape instead of staying marked.
Why it is the outdoor rubber
It withstands ultraviolet radiation without degrading or fading. That single property defines almost all of its uses.
It is the default material for plazas, playgrounds, recreation areas and any exposed surface where appearance is part of the brief. It also takes a wide colour range, which is what lets you design with it rather than merely cover a floor.
What to know before specifying it
It costs more. Around 57 % more per kilo than SBR, according to customs import values. That is a difference you need to be able to justify.
It is imported. Local production is rare, so lead times are those of any import: around ninety days. If the site has a committed date, this weighs more than any technical consideration.
In peak season colours run out. It is a supply detail that appears on no data sheet and derails projects: the palette is wide on paper, but not every colour is available at the same time. Confirm availability of the exact colour before closing the specification, not after.
When it pays off and when it does not
It pays off when there is sun and colour matters. It does not pay off indoors, where SBR does the same structural job for considerably less.
And there is a third case, usually the right answer on site: an EPDM wear layer over a recycled SBR shock base. You pay for sun resistance and colour only in the layer that is seen and walked on, and the volume — where the weight and therefore the cost sits — comes from the economical material.
