EPDM or SBR: which one and why
It is the decision that comes up most often when specifying rubber flooring, and it is almost always framed wrong: as though one were better than the other. Neither is. They cover different needs, and the usual mistake is paying for EPDM where SBR would have done, or laying SBR where the sun will punish it.
The difference that decides: sunlight
Everything else is secondary to this.
EPDM withstands ultraviolet radiation without degrading or fading. That is why it is the default material for plazas, parks and exposed surfaces.
Pigmented SBR has markedly lower colour stability in sunlight. It does not fail structurally: the colour dulls, and on a surface installed precisely for its appearance, that is a failure.

Colour
Recycled SBR starts from the black or grey of shredded tyre and takes pigment, but with a short palette.
EPDM widens the range considerably. With one supply caveat that appears on no data sheet: in peak season not every colour is available, because it is an imported product.
Price
Customs import values give the most honest reference, because they are prices paid rather than offer listings.

EPDM costs around 57 % more per kilo. That is bulk raw material, before binder, tooling or factory margin — but the ratio carries over to the finished product reasonably well.
Lead time
The point that derails the most projects and gets asked about least.
Recycled SBR usually has local or regional production, so it can be sourced year-round with relative ease. EPDM is imported, and an import can take around ninety days.
If the site has a delivery date, lead time overrules specification. A perfect EPDM that arrives two months late is a bigger problem than a correct SBR that arrived on time.
The answer that is usually right
In exposed or high-traffic areas, what best balances the four variables is not choosing one but combining them: an EPDM wear layer over a recycled SBR shock base.
You pay for sun resistance and colour only in the layer that is seen and walked on, and the volume — where the weight and therefore the cost sits — comes from the economical material. It also incorporates recycled content, which tends to score points in public tenders.
