EPDM, ethylene-propylene-diene: international price

HS 400270 · Subheading of 4002 · Petrochemical

What a kilo of EPDM costs leaving the exporting country and what it costs landing in 11 markets across the Americas, year by year and month by month, from official United Nations customs data.

It takes sun, ozone and water without cracking. It is the coloured granule of running tracks and playgrounds, and that is what you are paying for.

It measures what a kilo of this heading costs landed in the markets tracked. It is a Laspeyres anchored to the base: each month is compared with the base month using only the markets present in both, so the index does not move because the set of reporters changed. A single heading rests on fewer declarations than the whole basket, so it moves more; months marked provisional will be revised as Comtrade completes the period.

“Ships at” and “Lands at” are the same shipment declared from both ends: what the 8 tracked origins send to these markets and what the 11 markets declare receiving from them, in 2025. The “reference” is the most recent monthly figure, which is the one to use for a sense of today's cost. The corridor covers 99% of what these markets import under this heading.

Recent months · through July 2026

Same customs data, month by month instead of year by year. It arrives two or three months late rather than two years, so it is as close to today's price as this source allows. In exchange it is noisier: in a country that moves little volume, a single large shipment shifts the month's average. Read the trend across several months, not the jump from one.

What this heading covers

Heading 400270 is non-conjugated ethylene-propylene-diene in primary forms. Three monomers, and the third is the one that matters: ethylene and propylene form long, smooth chains that on their own would slide past each other and stay deformed once stretched.

The diene acts as a cross-link. On vulcanising, it ties chains to one another and builds a three-dimensional network: that is why the material stretches underfoot and returns to shape. Without that third monomer you would have a plastic, not a rubber.

Why it costs more than SBR

The EPDM backbone is saturated: it has no free double bonds left for ozone and ultraviolet radiation to attack. That is precisely what SBR lacks.

Hence EPDM being the material of running tracks, playgrounds and any surface meant to spend ten years outdoors without cracking or shifting colour. You pay for that resistance, and with it comes a wide, stable colour palette that pigmented SBR cannot hold under sun.

What to check before requesting a quote

Diene content and the ethylene-to-propylene split define cure speed and final hardness. They are the two figures that separate one grade from another within the same heading.

On site, the number most often overlooked is the EPDM polymer content of the finished granulate. A surface sold as “EPDM” may carry 20% polymer or considerably less, the rest being mineral filler. The difference is invisible on delivery day and plain three years later. Specify it in writing, with a minimum.

And count the lead time before committing to a date: it is imported material and the typical cycle from order runs around three months. In peak season, not every colour is available either.
